Oh, Baby! Design a One of a Kind Nursery

April 10, 2014 by

One of the joys of getting ready for your new baby is setting up the nursery. As a parent, you want your baby’s room to be safe, comfortable, and functional above all else. You probably also want the space to be visually appealing to both you and your little one. If you’d rather create a one of a kind space for your baby than purchase one of the typically themed sets featuring cartoon characters or zoo animals, you’re in luck! There have never been more options available for decorating-savvy parents. The truth is that your baby doesn’t yet have decor preferences, so as long as you offer a few things that are visually stimulating, like a high-contrast mobile, you should feel free to indulge your own decorating impulses. He or she will have an opinion about their room soon enough, so until then, have fun!

Here are some fresh ideas for creating a baby nursery you’ll be proud to show off. Heck, you may end up liking it more than your own bedroom (in which case, that should be next on your home makeover punch list). Gorgeous nurseries adults will love:
1. Ships and Shores – Climb aboard the nautical theme! Navy blue and white, with bright pops of red create a gender neutral nursery theme that look great at any age. Stripes and ship anchors are hot in home decor, so you won’t have trouble finding crib bedding and accessories to create a cohesive style.

2. Antiques and Shabby Chic – If you love the distressed look and soft colors of shabby chic furniture, there are many furniture lines that sell cribs, changing tables, dressers, and rocking chairs that will be absolutely perfect. Choose crib bedding in chenille, eyelet, or soft floral prints to bring it all together.

3. Bohemian Bliss – For a blissed-out Bohemian nursery you’ll love, choose a hodge-podge of bold jewel toned patchworks. A child sized tee in one corner of the room will look great now, and your baby will love it for imaginary play when they’re older. Instead of a rocking chair, consider a gorgeous hanging hammock seat for your late night feeding sessions. Hang some twinkle lights and decorating accents from nature, and you’re gypsy babe’s sweet little nook will be complete.

4. Modern Baby – If you love the clean lines of modern design, you’ll find that many designers with lines of baby products share your preferences! Choose simple, streamlined furniture, and no-frills bedding in solid colors. Oval shaped cribs incredibly popular with modern design fans, and offer a unique look. An Eames rocking chair is both practical and beautiful, so if you’ve wanted one but never had a good excuse to shell out the money, here’s your chance!

5. Enchanted Forest – If you want to pass on your love of the great outdoors to your baby, bring a little bit of the forest into your home. Stuffed animal taxidermy is a sweet twist on the trend, and crib bedding featuring every imaginable forest creature can be found in most baby stores. Add whimsy by incorporating some gnomes and mushrooms into your baby’s woodland wonderland for a fairytale twist.

6. Fly Away Home – Want a nursery that’s for the birds? The versatility of this theme is incredible! Bedding and decorating options run the gamut across the interior design spectrum. From bold primary colors with blackbird silhouettes, realistic Audobon Society style illustrations, to origami crane mobiles or round, soft, pastel owls, you’ll find birds on everything you will want or need in your baby’s nursery.

7. Tiny Jetsetters – If your hopes and dreams for your wee one include being well traveled, why not bring the world into your nursery? A bank shaped like a globe to start saving for baby’s first trip will look adorable on the dresser. An airplane shaped light fixture gives baby something cool on the ceiling to look at while lying on his back. A giant map of the world for wall art, and an enormous trunk for a toy box are great options for a travel themed room for your future travel buddy.

Let your imagination run wild as you dream up the perfect design for your nursery. Being a parent is one of the most incredible adventures you’ll ever take, and the fun begins even before your baby’s grand entrance!
